LONDON,UK. May 15th, 2025 – Microplastics are not just an environmental issue –they are a planetary emergency, according to Bengt Rittri, Swedish ecopreneur and founder of Bluewater, a global leader in clean drinking water and beverage solutions.

His warning follows a landmark study published in Nature that warned microplastics are now so deeply embedded in the ocean’s structure that they alter the Earth’s fundamental biogeochemical processes.

The international study, which rigorously analysed data from 1,885 ocean stations between 2014 and 2024 using state-of-the-art sampling and analysis techniques, found microplastic particles — ranging in size from 1 to 100 micrometers — permeating the entire water column, from the surface to depths of over 6,800 meters. Concentrations exceeded 13,500 particles per cubic meter in the Mariana Trench and averaged 2,200 particles per cubic meter in the upper 200 meters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Researchers documented that plastic debris, particularly buoyant polymers and dense materials like PET, now contributes ‘allochthonous carbon’ to marine ecosystems. This term refers to carbon that originates from outside the ecosystem, in this case, from the breakdown of plastic. This artificial carbon presence not only distorts carbon dating by up to 420 years but also threatens key biological processes such as nitrification and denitrification, which are essential for maintaining marine life and regulating the climate.

Rittri emphasized, “It is painfully clear that we’ve allowed plastic pollution to compromise the planet’s life-support systems. This is not just about litter or aesthetics, but protecting the integrity of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere. Microplastics are a planetary emergency.”

In response, Bluewater continues to scale up its efforts to prevent microplastics at the point of consumption. The company designs advanced water purifiers for home, workplace, and recreational use that remove micro- and nano-sized plastic particles, as well as other contaminants such as toxic PFAS chemicals and lead from tap water. Additionally, Bluewater promotes sustainable hydration through its range of reusable stainless-steel bottles, reducing the need for single-use plastic bottles while on the go.

“Every action matters, and every single-use plastic bottle not used is a step toward restoring planetary health,” Rittri added. “As a purpose-driven company, we call on global leaders, businesses, and citizens to act now to eliminate single-use plastic bottles and support sustainable water solutions.”

LONDON, UK. August 28th, 2024 – A massive global U.S. study indicates 40 percent of people worldwide are falling out of love with tap water amid fears it is unsafe is a shocking insight demanding urgent attention by governments worldwide, says Bluewater, a global innovator of water purification and beverage solutions. The study – published in the journal Nature Communications – was carried out among 148,585 adults in 141 countries by researchers at two U.S. universities, Northwestern University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“This shocking revelation underlines the need for governments and water authorities worldwide to urgently tackle the contamination of our drinking water by toxic chemicals, microplastics, and other pollution,” said Bluewater founded and CEO Bengt Rittri. The Swedish ecopreneur added that public distrust of tap water was driving the sale of packaged water, which has a hugely negative impact on the planet’s health, environment, and inhabitants.

According to the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, over 600 billion single-use plastic bottles are produced yearly; most are not recycled but end up in landfills and oceans, where they release toxic chemicals and break down into micro and nanoplastic particles. A groundbreaking 2023 report entitled ‘Hidden Hazards: The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle’ concluded that the proliferation of PET plastics “may prolong the climate crisis, threaten human health, and promote environmental racism.”

Mr. Rittri noted that the new study spotlights how difficult it is for consumers to judge the hazards and safety of their water supply because many contaminants cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. He said he was astounded that 39% of those polled in the United States believed they faced serious harm from drinking tap water in the short term.

“When we launched Bluewater in 2013, it was with a planet plan rather than a traditional business vision, with the aim to develop technologies and solutions that would end the need for single-use plastic bottles,” Mr. Rittri said. He added that Bluewater continues to pursue its plan vigorously, with a steady stream of solutions giving consumers and businesses the means to turn tap water into purified water that is safer and healthier to drink.

In 2024 alone, Bluewater has launched a series of new products, including a unique kitchen station for homes and restaurants that removes up to 99.7 percent of contaminants like toxic PFAS chemicals and microplastics from tap water and adds vital minerals for enhanced health and taste.

Bluewater has also introduced a new range of public dispensers in Europe called Bluewater Flow for use in public spaces such as gyms, offices, hospitals, and schools, while other public dispensing solutions have proved hugely successful at mega sporting and other events looking to improve their sustainability credentials. These include golf, sailing, and running events like the British Open, The Ocean Race, America’s Cup, the Cape Town Marathon, governmental events such as COP 27 and 28, and myriad business conferences.
“We understand that the only way to tackle the plastic bottle menace is to restore public confidence in tap water, which will take substantial time, effort and money… or to increase awareness that solutions exist – like those provided by Bluewater that enable consumers to purify their tap water at point of use,” Mr Rittri said.

LONDON, UK 21st March 2023 – On the eve of World Water Day, water purification and beverage leader Bluewater announces 2023 will be the year it radically widens its product portfolio to help break the stranglehold of polluting single-use plastic bottles. The company urges world governments to accelerate efforts to address the global water crisis and, specifically, halt the sale of single-use plastic bottles scarring our oceans and rivers.

The sizeable basement beneath the Stockholm townhouse office of Bluewater, the global Swedish water purification and beverage company shaping sustainable hydration’s future, has been repurposed as the company’s innovation laboratory. And it’s chockablock with shiny new equipment, half-finished purifier prototypes, snaking pipes, computers, filters, faucets of every shape, as well as several large hyper-durable travel cases, some seriously battered.

“The used cases contain Bluewater’s radically new Sumo™ water filtration system and have just successfully finished a tour of duty in ultimate field testing by Ukrainian armed forces in battlefield conditions,” explains Bluewater founder and CEO Bengt Rittri. He notes the emergency water delivery systems will be launched initially in April to first responder agencies where access to emergency supplies of clean water are vital, whether by fire fighters tackling forest blazes, humanitarian organisations responding to natural disasters such as earthquakes, or establishing a military field hospital in a remote location.

Rittri explained the highly mobile and rugged Sumo™ system, which packs down into two suitcases, is designed to work off the grid and can hydrate up to 6,000 people daily, using fuel- or solar-powered generators for power when regular electrical supplies are unavailable.

Harnessing the third-generation Sumo™ reverse osmosis solution developed by Bluewater in the innovation laboratory, the system can utilize and clean practically any available water source, municipal or natural such as a lake or river, and within minutes deliver purified water.

The mobile water purifier equipment is just one of a number of game-changing innovations emerging from the ideas powerhouse of Bluewater and its cellar lab as the company strives to change how we access clean water on demand in a climate change world where its quality cannot be taken for granted.

For example, in a ground-breaking Middle East initiative, Bluewater is launching a unique all-in-one micro water purification, remineralizing, bottling, washing, capping, and delivery system for hotels and other hospitality customers in Dubai, which will help them end their need for single-use plastic bottles.

Globally, the last three years have also seen Bluewater emerge as a cutting-edge supplier of water dispensers and sustainable bottle solutions to major sporting and other events and venues seeking to reduce their use of throwaway plastic water bottles, including the British Open, Formula E, the Cape Town Marathon, and The Ocean Race. Bluewater’s event solutions, geared to disrupt an industry that has long depended on sales of plastic bottles of water to fan, include multi-dispenser ‘walls of water’ equipped with digital signage screens.

The company is also on the verge of announcing a successful trailblazing entry into rainwater harvesting with the completion in April of an exciting water dispenser solution in the UK for use in electric vehicle recharging environments.

“I’m an optimist who believes in harnessing human ingenuity to tackle the multiple environmental challenges the world faces,” says Rittri, a Swedish environmental entrepreneur who two decades ago revolutionized the way the world cleaned indoor air under threat from unfettered air pollution from traffic and industrial and other emissions. After selling his air company, Blueair, to Unilever in 2016, Mr. Rittri turned his energy to solving water quality problems and the issue of microplastic pollution resulting from the tsunami of single-use plastic bottles.

“Putting sustainability at the heart of our business mission from when we launched in 2013 meant we didn’t just focus on merely cleaning water for use at home, work and play,” Rittri continued. “We’re tapping into more of a creative, conceptual approach that I prefer to call ‘social water,’ which is about changing attitudes and the way we access and use water for drinking and washing.”

He added: “Being change-makers demands we must constantly think out of the box. That’s a mission that has led us to innovate water dispensing technology and mineral and vitamin-enhanced beverages that can be generated, dispensed, and bottled at source, thereby avoiding unnecessary transportations that contribute to air pollution.”

To fulfill its bigger sustainability mission, Bluewater recruits scientists and engineers from around the world and taps into Stockholm’s world-class Royal Institute of Technology talent pool. Rittri says innovation, scale, infrastructure, and flexibility are crucial to Bluewater’s ability to deliver the changes he wants to see in managing hydration better in the years ahead to alleviate the damage already done to the planet, where micro-plastics and hazardous chemicals pose a still-growing threat to human and planetary health.

“We live in a world where it is not business as usual with dysfunction across the entire water cycle threatening health, jobs, and business growth,” says Rittri. “If we want Bluewater to be the future of water and hydration in a world where 2 billion people currently lack access to safe drinking water while the UN warns water demand may exceed supply by 40 percent by 2030, we must offer practical solutions that help governments, local authorities, businesses, and consumers accelerate their collective and individual efforts to solve growing planet-wide water crisis and halt the  production, transport, and use of single-use plastic bottles.”

London, UK. 10th July – A new study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that at least 45 percent of U.S. tap water may be contaminated by one or more types of forever chemicals known as per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, or PFAS. PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals used across various applications, from the linings of fast-food boxes and non-stick cookware to firefighting foams, pesticides, cosmetic creams, furnishing textiles, and outdoor clothing.

“The USGS findings are both shocking and scary as PFAS has been found in tap and bottled water around the world and linked to numerous adverse human health effects,” says Bengt Rittri, the founder and CEO of the global beverage and water purification company Bluewater.

A Swedish environmental entrepreneur who has made it his life mission to bring safe and healthier water to everyone, Mr. Rittri noted that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency EPA has warned that high concentrations of PFAS chemicals have been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women as well as kidney or testicular cancer, raised cholesterol levels, and damage to the immune system, for example.

The issue of PFAS is not restricted to the United States. The European Environment Agency reports that national monitoring activities have detected PFAS in the environment across Europe.  It says the production and use of PFAS in products ‘has resulted in the contamination of drinking water supplies in several European countries. In some highly polluted areas, concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorosulfonic acid (PFOS) in drinking water were above the limit value for individual PFAS proposed in the 2018 recast of the EU Drinking Water Directive (EC, 2017)’. And in China, a 2021 study by a team from Tsinghua University found that nearly 100 million people had been supplied water laden with levels of toxic chemicals that exceeded safe limits.

“The long-term tail of PFAS contamination is such that even if the release of the toxic chemicals was stopped tomorrow, the European Chemicals Agency warns they would continue to be present in the environment and humans for many generations,” Mr. Rittri said.

Rich Razgaitis, CEO of Bluewater North America, concurred with Mr. Rittri: “This study is a compelling confirmation of the contaminants in our drinking water here in the U.S. and how widespread the problem is.” He said the USGS research adds tremendous urgency for why our schools, businesses and consumers need to take water purification into their own hands right where they work, rest and play.”

According to USGS, their new research marks the first time anyone has tested for and compared PFAS in tap water from private and government-regulated public water supplies on a broad scale throughout the United States. Those data were used to model and estimate PFAS contamination nationwide. Because they break down very slowly, PFAS are commonly called “forever chemicals.” The USGS said PFAS persistence in the environment and prevalence everywhere make them a unique water-quality concern.

In their study, USGS scientists collected tap water samples directly from people’s kitchen sinks at 716 locations representing a range of low, medium, and high human-impacted areas. They discovered the interim health advisories released by the U.S. EPA in 2022 for PFOS and PFOA were exceeded in every sample in which they were detected in their new study, which tested for 32 individual PFAS compounds using a method developed by the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory.

In independent tests, Bluewater has confirmed its purifiers can successfully remove up to 99.99% of the health-threatening PFAS chemicals, such as PFOA, PFOS, PFBA, and PFBS, which have been found in the tap water of communities worldwide.

The Bluewater research was carried out in a laboratory at the prestigious Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH), and the results were verified by the independent bio-analytical testing group Eurofins

Dr. Ahmed Fawzy, Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Bluewater who carried out the tests at KTH verified by Eurofins, said little detailed information is available regarding which specific PFAS are used in what applications and to what extent. “Due to the uncertainty, we decided to independently test the PFAS removal efficiency of our Bluewater Pro water purifier,” he said.

The tests encompassed the four most common PFAS compounds in drinking water listed by the Swedish National Food Agency, PFOA, PFOS, PFBA, and PFBS.

Dr. Fawzy said: “We deliberately contaminated the water entering the Bluewater Pro with PFAS at concentrations higher than average levels and then fed the water through the Bluewater purifier. Testing the purified water revealed an unequivocal result; Bluewater’s unique second-generation SuperiorOsmosis™ technology had removed up to 99.99 percent of all the PFAS chemicals we tested for.”

PFAS has been shown to accumulate over time in humans and the environment. The European Environment Agency (EEA) describes PFAS as ‘moderately to highly toxic, particularly for children’s development,’ while In mid-January 2021, a study published in Environmental Sciences Europe said around 100 million Chinese in 66 cities across China were drinking tap water with unsafe levels of PFAS.

London, UK. 19th July 2023 – Swedish water and beverage brand Bluewater is delighted to announce its return to the excitement of the America’s Cup as the Official Water Purification Supplier of NYYC American Magic, Challenger for the 37th America’s Cup. Bluewater previously supplied a water station at the 2017 America’s Cup village in Bermuda.

“We are extremely proud to have partnered with the American Magic team competing for the world’s foremost and most challenging sailing prize,” says Bluewater founder and CEO Bengt Rittri. Bluewater supplies the American Magic team with the company’s state-of-the-art water dispensers that use leading-edge patented technology that removes all known contaminants from water to ensure safer, healthier hydration. In addition, Bluewater has provided the racing team’s athletes and support staff with exclusive, highly durable 800 ml sustainable bottles that keep liquids tasting great and hot or cold for up to 24 hours.

“When conditions get tough on the water, Bluewater’s bottles – which we warranty to last a lifetime – are designed to handle whatever the toughest marine elements throw at them while keeping the sailors properly hydrated,” said Rittri.

“We are proud to partner with Bluewater as our Official Water Purification Supplier for the 37th America’s Cup. Their advanced water dispensers and sustainable bottles will be vital in ensuring our athletes stay hydrated during intense training and racing. Moreover, this partnership allows us to reduce the environmental impact caused by single-use plastic bottles,” said Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations and Skipper, NYYC American Magic.

Drinking purified water dispensed from Bluewater’s public water stations for American Magic was successfully trialed at American Magic’s US base test center in Pensacola, Florida, for six months during 2022 and 2023. An initial three dispensers have been installed at the crew team base and staff areas in Barcelona, Spain, where the 37th America’s Cup drama will unfold over the coming months until the event takes place in September and October of 2024.

“The cutting-edge dispensers utilize Bluewater’s unique SuperiorOsmosis technology to ensure users are served pure, delicious, and planet-friendly water on demand, avoiding the unsustainable transportation of plastic bottles and their costly collection and disposal,” notes Mr. Rittri. Bluewater water purifiers remove up to 99.7% of bacteria, viruses, microplastics, toxic chemicals, and other impurities as small as 0.0001 microns (about 400 times smaller than the smallest virus).

Bluewater’s pioneering water purification technology and bottles solutions have become an increasingly common sight at major events like the British Open golf tournament, the Cape Town Marathon, the Ohana music festival, and countless others, including the COP27 Climate Action Innovation Zone in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Designed to help turn the tide on using single-use plastic bottles, Bluewater has developed a planet-friendly event ecosystem combining bottles, an eye-catching messaging platform, and digital signage options that helps event organizers replace any lost revenue from banning plastic bottle sales.

Bluewater has pledged to collect one kilo of plastic from a seashore for every one of its bottles that are sold. As a mark of its sustainability contributions, Bluewater was honored in 2022 by IQ Magazine, one of Europe’s leading publications for the festival industry, with a 2022 Green Guardian award for its unique hydration solutions. IQ Magazine’s judging panel of sustainability experts said Bluewater deserves to be recognized for ‘the hard work it is doing to improve sustainability in the live entertainment sector.

“The ubiquitous pollution of our planet by single-use plastic bottles has led to a world where microplastics are in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink and subsequently are being found in the human body, including lungs, blood, and digestive system, which is very, very scary,” said Bengt Rittri.

Rittri added: “We want to thank American Magic for putting their faith in Bluewater hydration solutions as part of their commitment to not only help their athletes to hydrate with cleaner, healthier water but also create cleaner oceans free of plastic contamination for future generations.”

Not one, but two high-performing Bluewater Water Walls

Bluewater is keeping thirsty fans enjoying the golf at Royal Liverpool hydrated with two of the company’s innovative mega-sized ‘Water Wall’ hydration stations, plus a range of other water stations deployed throughout the venue designed to provide visitors to The 151st Open with a refreshing and sustainable way to quench their thirst without the need for single-use plastic bottles.

“Gone are the days of lugging around toxic single-use plastic bottles or constantly searching for drinking fountains,” says Philip Russell, Managing Director of Bluewater’s Event organization. “Thanks to Bluewater’s strategically sited 16 hydration stations around the Royal Liverpool venue, players, fans, staff and volunteers will be able to refill with purified and chilled drinking water across the Championship.”  Bluewater has also supplied a range of customised stainless steel refillable bottles, which will be available for purchase on site.

Bluewater’s Water Wall hydration stations have been specially developed for premium events and venues to combine a mass drinking water dispensing solution with a unique brand activation platform.  The Water Walls incorporate 55” high-bright TV screens with full content customisation capability.  Two Water Walls will be in operation at Royal Liverpool this week: an 8-metre Wall in the main Spectator Village next to The Shop, and a 7-metre Wall directly adjacent to the Mastercard Club.

“We’ve designed our Water Walls to act as high-visibility hydration oases that are simply unmissable at major events, added Philip Russell. He said the Water Walls offer convenience and align perfectly with The R&A’s deep-rooted commitment towards environmental sustainability at The Open, which is “something that resonates deeply within all avid golfers who appreciate and respect the unique connection the sport has with the natural world.”

Unique collaboration

Mastercard, an Official Patron of The Open, has proudly supported The Open Water Project since 2021.  The project, created and instigated by The R&A in collaboration with Bluewater, saw The Open become one of the first major sporting events in the world to completely eliminate single-use plastic water bottles.  For every Bluewater stainless steel refillable bottle sold on site, a proportion of revenues are directed towards Priceless Planet Coalition tree planting projects.  Mastercard founded the Priceless Planet Coalition in 2020 as a platform for combatting climate change by planting 100 million trees by 2025.  Golf fans on site at The Open are being encouraged to make donations to PPC tree planting using the QR codes and tap-and-donate modules integrated within the Water Walls.  Direct donation is also available via TheOpen.com/Mastercard

“This innovative project sets an inspiring example for other events, organisers, and sponsors worldwide,” says Bengt Rittri, a Swedish environmental entrepreneur. “We gratefully thank the commitment of The R&A to being a sustainability frontrunner and for taking the bold step to demonstrate that innovative and planet-friendly solutions are possible.  The example set by The Open is globally significant in showcasing that major events can be successfully delivered without reliance on the single-use plastic water bottles that are so damaging to planetary health.  At Bluewater, we are very proud to be able to supply our industry-leading solutions to enable this amazing project and to show the world that we can hydrate responsibly without compromising on convenience or taste or the commercial viability of a major event!”

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, September 26, 2023 – Bluewater, a leading innovator of cutting-edge water purification and beverage solutions, has called for PFAS chemicals to be urgently classified as an environmental risk factor. The call came after a new study linked the endocrine disruptor with cancer in women.

The study by researchers from UC San Francisco (UCSF), the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Michigan concluded exposure to certain endocrine-disrupting chemicals may be playing a role in cancers of the breast, ovary, skin, and uterus. The researchers discovered that people who developed those cancers have significantly higher levels of these chemicals in their bodies.

“With so many studies highlighting the alarming presence of potentially harmful chemicals in many drinking water sources around the world, consumers are rightly concerned about the long-term health implications of exposure to these chemicals, which can range from endocrine disruption to increased risk of chronic diseases,” said Bluewater founder and CEO Bengt Rittri, a Swedish environmental entrepreneur. Describing PFAS chemicals as a global environmental risk factor, Rittri said that Bluewater is wholeheartedly committed to innovating the world’s best water purification solutions that go beyond conventional technology.

Often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they are resistant to breaking down, PFAS have been shown to contaminate water, food and people through products such as cooking pans, waterproof clothing, stain-resistant carpets and fabrics, and food packaging. They can last for decades in the environment, and it’s estimated that almost everyone on the planet has some level of PFAS in their blood.

Bluewater is at the forefront of providing ground-breaking water purifiers for home, work and play that remove toxic chemicals and other health-threatening substances to safeguard communities and empower individuals by providing access to clean and healthy tap water. Bluewater water purifiers have been shown in independently verified research to remove up to 99.99% of health-threatening PFAS chemicals such as PFOA, PFOS, PFBA, and PFBS.

Bluewater is also focused on breaking the stranglehold of single-use plastic bottles, which are threatening ocean, river, and human health.

“Bluewater’s proprietary SuperiorOsmosis™ tech represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenge of chemicals in drinking water,” said Bluewater chief scientist Ahmed Fawzy, Ph. D., an industry expert.

Dr. Fawzy said that “using a combination of processes such as our reverse osmosis filtration, Bluewater effectively removes practically all known contaminants, including chemical pollutants like PFAS. This means consumers can have greater confidence in the safety and quality of the water they drink.”

Bluewater’s commitment to empowering women in the pursuit of safe drinking water is underscored by the fact that women and children are often the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of contaminants in water. By providing accessible and reliable purification solutions, Bluewater aims to eliminate the burden of obtaining safe water and create opportunities for women to thrive and succeed in their communities.

In addition to its cutting-edge technology, Bluewater stands out for its commitment to sustainability. The company’s water purifiers are engineered to be eco-friendly, ensuring minimal waste and energy consumption. This reflects Bluewater’s dedication to not only improving water quality but also reducing its environmental impact.

As part of its mission to raise awareness about the importance of clean drinking water, Bluewater will participate in trade conferences and expert panels in the coming months. Interested parties are encouraged to follow Bluewater on social media for updates and information on upcoming events.
