“This achievement is a pivotal moment for our materials manufacturing business. ISO 13485 certification validates its operational systems and sends a clear signal to partners and investors: we are ready to scale. It also reflects the maturity of our technology platform, the discipline of our team, and our commitment to executing a high-quality commercialisation strategy.”

This milestone positions 4D to accelerate the development of commercial partnerships, regulatory approvals, and revenue-generating opportunities as it advances its differentiated product pipeline toward global markets.

MELTON MOWBRAY, UK. January 24th, 2025Saint-Gobain PAM UK has appointed NCM Auctions to manage the complete clearance of its Holwell Works foundry in Melton Mowbray. The Yorkshire-based auction and asset management specialists will also oversee the asset recovery across the entire site.

The Holwell foundry was established in the 1870s and has been a significant part of Melton Mowbray’s industrial heritage for over 150 years thanks to its success in manufacturing access covers and gully gratings for the road, water and utility industries. Despite its achievements, the site’s closure follows a production transfer to their Saint-Gobain PAM sister facility at Blénod, France – a move that will halve PAM UK’s road ironwork carbon emissions and help their customers reach their net zero ambitions.

Under this significant contract, NCM will execute a comprehensive site clearance program at Holwell Works. The program will combine careful decommissioning with optimised asset value recovery through an auction and private treaty sales. The project showcases Saint-Gobain PAM’s commitment to responsible site management, with NCM ensuring full compliance with environmental and safety standards compliance throughout the clearance process.

The exclusive online auction covers the processing, manufacturing lines and machinery across the entire nine-acre site, including melting and moulding plants, finishing and assembly lines, workshops and scrap metal recovery.

The online catalogue features a wide array of specialist foundry equipment, including induction furnaces, dip ovens, manipulators and overhead magnet cranes, along with robotic welders, lathes, milling machines, compressors, conveyors, hoppers and much more.

While some companies may wish to dispose of only several high-value assets, PAM is committed to a sustainable approach by repurposing and recycling equipment and machinery across the site. This approach benefits the local community, small businesses, and charities and prevents these items from ending up in landfill.

Amy Rutherford, Partnership Lead at NCM, said: “This contract award from Saint-Gobain PAM represents a significant milestone for NCM Auctions and reinforces our position as a trusted and leading partner for specialised industrial site clearances like the Holwell Works site.

“Saint-Gobain PAM’s commitment to sustainability aligns with our approach, where valuable resources are repurposed, recycled and reintegrated into the circular economy.

“Due to the size and scale of this site, the auction includes hundreds of assets, from specialist foundry and steelmaking lines to industrial machinery that will be suitable for a wide variety of manufacturing applications. We’ve already had a lot of interest from overseas buyers.”

The catalogue is online now and bidding ends from 1pm on Thursday, 20 February.

Private Treaty offers are also being considered. Interested parties or those wanting to arrange viewings can contact NCM on 01302 898260 or email for more information.

MODENA, ITALY. January 8th, 2024 – ForTest, leader in industrial testing equipment and leak testers, announces its comprehensive software solution “Leak Test Manager” that revolutionizes how manufacturers monitor and control their leak testing operations.

This advanced software enables companies to centrally manage their entire fleet of leak testers and testing equipment through USB, Ethernet, or Serial connections, offering real-time monitoring and enhanced data traceability capabilities.

“In today’s manufacturing environment, efficient quality control and data traceability are not just optional features – they’re essential requirements,” says SW engineer Fabrizio Benatti, head of the Information Technology Department at ForTest and one of the software developers of the project.

“Our Leak Test Manager software addresses these critical needs by providing manufacturers with comprehensive control and monitoring capabilities.”

The software represents a significant advancement in leak testing management, offering manufacturers the ability to:

  • Monitor multiple leak testers and testing units in real-time from a single interface
  • Visualize pressure and decay graphs as tests occur
  • Configure testing parameters remotely
  • Automate test result documentation with direct export to MsSQL, Excel, or CSV formats
  • Integrate with 1D/2D barcode readers for product tracking
  • Maintain detailed testing histories with measured values
Fabrizio Benatti added: “The implementation of Leak Test Manager has already shown significant impact across various industries. Manufacturers in automotive, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors are reporting improved efficiency in their quality control processes and enhanced compliance with traceability requirements.”

This software solution particularly benefits companies dealing with strict regulatory requirements and those pursuing Industry 4.0 integration.

The automatic data export and comprehensive tracking features ensure that manufacturers can maintain detailed records of all testing procedures and results, supporting both quality assurance and regulatory compliance efforts.

With the advent of industry 4.0 and the interconnection of manufacturing systems through technologies such as robotics, AI, and IoT, traceability has become even more necessary.

The digitization of the manufacturing processes has changed the approach to data tracing. The increase in the amount of data now requires the use of centralized databases in addition to the labels applied directly on products, which alone are no longer sufficient.

These databases have become very useful because they allow users to collect a great amount of information and store it in a single place that can be accessed from different areas of a production process, making it available at any given time wherever it may be needed.

The use of standard industrial protocols, such as the popular Profinet, Modbus, EtherNet IP, EtherCAT and most recently OPC UA, has hugely simplified the interconnection between devices in the manufacturing industry as they are widely used and easy to install and operate.

CHELTENHAM, UK. 13th November, 2024 – In a significant High Court decision in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, Albright IP has successfully defended its client, Liking Ltd, against copyright infringement claims brought by WaterRower (UK) Ltd.

The judgement has set a precedent for copyright protection of non-sculptural 3D objects, specifically addressing the criteria for “a work of artistic craftsmanship” under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA).

WaterRower claimed that their water-resistance rowing machines were works of artistic craftsmanship and were protected by copyright, and that our Hong Kong-based client’s Topiom rowing machines infringed on this protection by allegedly reproducing a substantial part of the machines.

Liking Ltd argued that the WaterRower machines did not qualify as works of artistic craftsmanship and thus were ineligible for copyright protection.

In delivering his judgment, Judge Campbell Forsyth ruled that WaterRower machines, including its prototype, do not meet the requirements under UK law as works of artistic craftsmanship, and therefore, no copyright subsist in the machines.

This judgment underscores the divergence between UK and EU interpretations of copyright law, providing greater clarity for the UK’s requirements in assessing copyright eligibility for such 3D functional objects.

Albright IP, Patent Director, Cloe Loo, who served as IP attorney for Liking Ltd, commented: “This judgment provides much-needed clarity in UK copyright law on what qualifies as a work of artistic craftsmanship. For a number of years, conflicting UK and EU case law has created uncertainty around copyright protection for 3D objects that aren’t sculptures. This ruling establishes that such objects must meet the test of artistic craftsmanship to qualify for copyright. It’s an important milestone for the IP sector.”

Loo noted that navigating the case presented unique challenges, including coordinating across multiple time zones and languages to effectively communicate complex legal arguments to her client.

Working closely with Liking Ltd required not only a robust IP strategy but also a deep understanding of their language and business culture. Communicating the nuances of UK copyright law in Chinese, for instance, was essential to ensure our client was fully informed and comfortable with each stage of the case,” she explained.

Robert Games, Managing Director of Albright IP, praised Loo’s exceptional handling of the case: “We are immensely proud of Cloe. This was a challenging, multilingual case which was set to impact IP law. Cloe’s ability to build her team and manage these complexities in both English and Chinese is a testament to her commitment and expertise. This outcome is a notable achievement for Albright IP and highlights our team’s strength in high-stakes IP litigation.”

The judgement has implications for the IP industry, particularly concerning copyright eligibility criteria for 3D functional objects. It remains to be seen if an appeal will be pursued, but this case has already marked a turning point in defining the boundaries of artistic craftsmanship in UK copyright law.
